Despite the conflict in Kosovo, 1999 was a year full of special markings, particularly in Germany, where several squadrons celebrated their 40th anniversary.
Based in Büchel in western Germany, Jagdbombergeschwader 33 has been flying Tornados since 1985, the year it replaced the F-104 Starfighter. In September 1999, the squadron reached 100,000 flight hours on the Tornado, and it was for this occasion that the 45+88 was specially painted.
The aircraft is entirely glossy black, and the decoration features a yellow eagle head beneath the air intakes, while multicolored stripes representing the squadron’s units run along the wingtips and down the fuselage to the tail, which bears the squadron emblem.
